Rotterdam Cruise Port Excursions & Things to do

cruise terminal rotterdam

Having called Rotterdam my ‘home port’ for nearly 5 years now, I’m often asked about things to do for a day while visiting by cruise. Here are some of my favorite recommendations & tips about how to spend a day in Rotterdam. Holland America Line switched from scheduled passengerservice to cruising in 1971, and today, the renovated HAL embarkation andcustoms hall is the Cruise Terminal Rotterdam. Damen Shiprepair Rotterdam is Holland's largest shiprepair and vessel conversion yard, also one of Western Europe's largest shipyards. The facility is centrally located in Port Rotterdam and supports 250 employees.

Additionally, the terminal provides convenient parking facilities for those traveling by car. This allows passengers the option to drive to the terminal and securely park their vehicles during their cruise vacation. One of the standout features of this terminal is its strategic location. Situated on the south side of the Maas River, it provides breathtaking views of the Rotterdam skyline, including landmarks like the Euromast Tower and the Erasmus Bridge. Passengers can enjoy a leisurely walk along the waterfront promenade or relax at one of the nearby cafes and restaurants. Cross the Erasmus Bridge from the cruise terminal and stroll to Delfshaven, which is like stepping into the past.

When the water level recedes, the gates are floated back to the drydocks. There is a second flood barrier (Hartelkering) in Hartelkanaal. The port has a total area of approx 105 km2 (41 mi2), stretching over approx 40 km (25 mi). It consists of all 5 distinct port zones plus 3 distribution cargo parks. There are 8 deep-water terminals serving around 150,000 different shipping companies. The first cruise liners docked at Port Rotterdam were Holland America Line's steamships – SS Nieuw Amsterdam (1906-built), SS Statendam (1956), and SS Rotterdam (1959).

One of the advantages of the Cruise Terminal at Maasvlakte 2 is its strategic location. Situated directly on the coast, it offers stunning views of the North Sea and the surrounding industrial landscape. Passengers can enjoy the sight of massive container ships coming and going from one of Europe’s largest ports. Additionally, this terminal is within walking distance of the vibrant Witte de Withstraat, known for its trendy bars, art galleries, and cultural events.

Markthal is a unique and iconic building located in the center of Rotterdam, easily accessible by foot from the Cruise Port, or by metro. It is a combination of a residential complex and a market hall, making it an innovative multi-use piece of architecture. The interior of the building features a vibrant and colorful mural that wraps around its curved shape, truly visually striking! Look closer, though, and you’ll see windows within the mural which are where the residences above can see down into the market. Alternatively, the Wilhelminaplein Metro station is at the end of the road the cruise terminal is located on.

The port was also extended into North Sea at Nieuwe Waterweg's southern side via Maasvlakte (built near Hoek van Holland - a coastal city on Nieuwe Waterweg's northern bank). In the city centre you will now find the largest piece of art in the world where every foodie needs to go. Find all kind of vendors here with Dutch and International specialties. Between 1946 and 1949 Five brand new warehouses were built on the North side of the Wilhelminapier, all named after port cities (Philadelphia, Norfolk, Baltimore, New York en Rotterdam). This pier has a lot of history, where many Europeans started the Atlantic crossing to start their new lifes.

The ride takes about 20 minutes, departs a few times per hour and will cost you about 6 euro one way. When a ship is in port the tourist information is usually kind enough to provide a free shuttle service into the city centre. Ask the tourist information in the cruise terminal for details.

Situated on the southern bank of the Maas River, this terminal is known for its historical significance and proximity to cultural landmarks. The Cruise Port of Rotterdam is strategically located near many popular tourist attractions. Within walking distance, you can explore the vibrant city center, visit iconic landmarks like the Markthal and Cube Houses, or take a leisurely stroll along the riverfront promenade.
